Helping Territorians gain confidence and find their voice.
"The thought of speaking in public makes me so nervous that I just freeze and don't know what to say, so I avoid speaking at all whenever I can so I don't make a fool of myself."
"I feel like I'm falling behind at work because I just don't know how to speak up in meetings. It's at the point now where no one asks me anything at all, and I never get heard."
"I once went to a public speaking club, but it was basically a meeting about meetings and I learned nothing from it and never went back."

Unless otherwise advertised, Speakstarter Darwin Club meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5.30pm to 7.00pm except for January. Meetings are held at Darwin Innovation Hub, Level 1, 48-50 Smith Street, Darwin City (entry via Raintree Park.) Tea, coffee, iced water and biscuits are included in each meeting.
Our private sessions have a set formula that we following that focuses on your physiological responses to public speaking, strategies to work with them, structure and planning for when you do need to speak, and fast-results training techniques that quickly rewire the way you approach public speaking in your mind and then match your new thinking to real, live act of speaking publicly.
Our training holds both a current National Police Check and Ochre Card for Working with Children in the Northern Territory, however the program is designed specifically to work with people over the age of 13 years only. In the future, we plan to offer in-school programs for teens and kids where they can work in a safe, familiar environment. Parents are welcome to join their teenagers in the sessions at all times, and are encouraged to be part of the process.
Our whole philosophy revolves around three core ideas about why people struggle with public speaking. You can read about it on our Framework page on this website. So our club meetings also work to address these areas. First, we work on our body's reaction to nerves. Then we work on planning and strategy for a short 60-second speech. Then finally we practice delivery in pairs before delivering a speech in front of the whole group.
At any meeting, any participant can choose to pass on any of the activities, and instead, help the others to practice their speeches. You always have the power to say "pass" and no one will try to coerce you in to speaking. You will know when you're ready and you can pass as long as you need to.
Finally, club members can choose to take part in our two annual gala events where they can undertake a special three month training program to deliver a 10-minute speech to an audience of friends, family, participants and special events.
We work on the principles of modern TEDtalks rather than archaic speeches so that you can take your skills into the real world and even pursue professional speaking opportunities.
